Before dedicating himself to straw marquetry, Bernardo d’Orey explored several worlds linked to luxury and precious objects. After training in hospitality, he joined Louis Vuitton, then Chanel Joaillerie, before specialising in antique jewellery at Faerber. He later worked for prestigious houses including Patek Philippe.
He discovered and refined the art of straw marquetry with Lison de Caunes. Over several years, he perfected this demanding technique until it became his own creative language. Today, he specialises mainly in small-scale objects — boxes, watch dials and unique pieces — where every detail can be worked with almost millimetric precision.
Light lies at the heart of his approach. By varying the direction of the fibres, colours and textures, Bernardo transforms straw into a shifting material capable of creating depth and movement without adding volume. A patient craft in which gesture itself becomes design.
